Fine Wine – Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855

The Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 resulted from the 1855 Exposition Universelle de Paris, when Emperor Napoleon III requested a classification system for France’s best Bordeaux wines which were to be on display for visitors from around the world.  The wines were ranked in importance from first to fifth growths (crus). All of the red wines that made it on the list came from the Médoc region except for one:Château Haut-Brion from Graves.  The white wines, then of much less importance than red wine, were limited to the sweet varieties of Sauternes and Barsac and were ranked only from first great growth to second growth.  Many of the first growths depending on the vintage have gained ratings from RP95 all the way up to Rp100, as well as WS100.   A few of the best vintages from Bordeaux from the last 25 years are 1982 – 1986 – 1989 – 1990 – 1996 – 2000 – 2005

The First Growths in the 1855 Classification are from the following Château’s.

Château Lafite Rothschild

Château Latour

Château Mouton Rothschild (reclassified from Second Growth status in 1973)

Château Margaux

Château Haut-Brion

Dom Perignon Champagne Review

Dom Perignon is one of the most recognized fine champagne’s in the world.  With many vintages receiving high RP and WS ratings it is no wonder that this bubbly is highly celebrated.  Having to offer a compelling array of typical mature DP aromas and flavors supported by vibrant minerality, Dom Perignon never disappoints.

List of RP100 / WS100 Point PTS Wines (IGW)

Many collectors or wine connoisseur purchase wine whether it be to consume or simply just looking for an investment grade wine (IGW) to build upon their wine cellar or collection.  Clients both domestic and international, use Robert Parker’s wine ratings to research the quality and aging of potential of wines. Sticking to Parker’s 99 and 100 point-rated wine recommendations can be a sound investment strategy, however there are still many gems that are not rated RP99 or RP100 which we would recommend to clients to diversify their palette or portfolio.

When purchasing IGW we would advise that the client look for some factors such as the scarcity of the wine, aging potential, quality/condition, and reputation of the vineyard. These are a few things that collectors often look for when plunking down funds for IGW items.  Why invest in wine?  Unlike items such as watches and cars, wines have a set number of production in that vintage and as more bottles get consumed this makes each bottle more scare.  We have a list of a few RP100 / WS100 rated wines that we love and carry.  Please take a look and feel free to comment on our picks of the elusive RP 100 and WS 100 ratings!
